FAQ SMP
What is Scalp Micropigmentation?
Also known as SMP, is a non-surgical cosmetic procedure that involves the apppication of tiny dots of pigment into the scalp to create the illusion of fuller hair/more density or to simulate a shaved head look. It's often used as a solution for hair loss + thinning hair to camouflage the scalp.
How does it work?
Tiny pigment dot deposits are made into the scalp using a specific tattooing technique. These dots replicate the look of natural hair follicles, creating the appearance of a denser hair line, fuller hair, or a shaved head. SMP is tailored to match the individual's hair follicle shade, skin tone, and desired hairline shape, density, and style.
Can I book with previously done work by another artist?
Unfortunately we will not work over another artists work.
What is the cost?
The cost is based off the treatment type (I.E. blade with hairline recreation / or density on long hair) as well as the extent of your hair loss, so this will vary per client.
All appointments require a no-commitment consultation where we will look over the areas of concern and give you a set price before booking. Cost can be broken up to be paid in 3 sessions unless client prefers to pay in full at first session.
Consultations are booked for about 15 mins.

How many sessions does it take?
For every client it will take about 3-4 sessions to fully complete! We break this down into sessions to ensure we start conservatively and work up the density at each session.
The first session is light/conservative because we want to figure your scalp out, everyone's skin is different and we want to see how you heal.
The second session we see how it heals and we will know if we need to adjust the shade or pressure.
The third session we then make it all 3 Dimensional.
The fourth session is booked about a month out from your third session and is complementary - we ensure the healed results are perfect and assess if we need to add anymore density to the area. We do this complementary to ensure our clients have the best looking results possible!
How long do I need to wait to come back for my next session?
You can come back as soon as two weeks! For example after your first session you can come back in two weeks for your second then in two weeks for your third! The 4th session is the only one that may be booked out a month away!
You can go longer then two weeks if desired but we don't recommend going past 4 weeks to ensure your scalp is staying prepped!
Does it look fake?
Absolutely not! We strive for the most natural looking results possible. With proper application and technique Scalp Micropigmentation looks incredibly similar to a real head of hair. Through an in-depth consultation to figure out each client's unique needs and goals SMP can offer a highly convincing illusion.
How long does it last?
SMP is considered a permanent procedure, designed to last around 3-4 (+)years depending on client's specific areas worked and if they follow proper aftercare to ensure it lasts. Some clients who are completely bald MAY prefer to come back yearly for a touchup to ensure a fresh look but it is only a matter of preference.
It's longevity is due to the permanent cosmetic pigments used, which ensures it doesn't fade too fast or change color.
When should I come back for a touchup?
Typically people may come back every 3-4 years, but it is truly preference of each client. Some may be able to go longer and others may want to come in sooner. The goal of a touchup is just to maintain the intensity of the color and crispiness of the application.
Is it worth it?
Overall SMP is a great idea for those wanting to fill in patchy or thinning areas, or their whole scalp. It is easy to maintain, non-surgical, cost effective, and gives natural looking results that last for years.
Will it hurt?
No it will not hurt! Most people feel a little pressure or pokes. We do not penetrate the skin deep enough for it to cause enough pain to require a numbing to be used; as the results will not be as good with numbing because the numbing toughens the skin causing the pigment to not be taken as well. --- If nervous at all I recommend to clients bring your phone, a book, laptop, or headphones to take your mind away from it!
I have long hair, how will this work for me? Absolutely! One of the main reasons clients with long hair opt to get SMP is to add visual density. Long hair can sometimes highlight thinning areas more conspicuously, especially under lighting or when hair is styled a certain way (I.E. pulled back) we tackle this issue by:
Filling in gaps, adding pigment to the areas of the scalp where hair is sparse making the hair look fuller.
We would focus more on diminishing contrast by reducing the visibility of the scalp through your hair! The pigment creates a shadow effect the mimics the appearance of denser hair. This will make the thinning areas less noticeable and give a more uniformed hair density across the scalp. We blend the pigments in a way that they integrate seamlessly with the natural hair.
What happens if overtime my hair loss continues and I need more areas worked on? Is that still considered a touchup?
Touchups are only for the areas that we previously worked on. If your hair loss continues further sessions of SMP may be required to maintain consistent density across the scalp. Always ask for a consultation to assess new areas if you are ever not sure!
Can I get this done if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?
Unfortunately no, to be precautionaery we do require that clients wait until after they give birth and have finished breast feeding before booking.
Do you match my hair color or how does the color work?
So for SMP the goal is actually to made the shade of your hair follicle rather then your hair color. For example if you were to shave your head your hair at the follicle is not a "color" but a shade, the color comes when your hair grows out. With SMP we're building on the foundation to create the illusion of more density and hair - if the foundation is there it will help "build the house" (aka the look of your hair)
Can I wear a hat/wig/hair peices after my appointment?
As long as it is a loose fitting that is fine if you are doing something quick like running to the store. But try to only wear when you absolutely need to because it's very important to allow your scalp time to breathe as much as you can - especially for the first 3 days.
How long does SMP take to heal?
The healing process is typically about 1-2 weeks. However complete healing and settlement into the skin can take several months. It's important to follow the aftercare instructions given to you by your practitioner and be patient while your scalp heals.
How do I sleep after SMP?
It's recommended to sleep with a satin or silk pillowcase if you can to help reduce friction and ensure a comfortable sleep while allowing the area to heal undisturbed.
